My word - my voice, Prešov December 6, 2014
The presentation was scheduled for December 6, the day of Sacrament of St. Nicholas, bishop. On this occasion students reported in the Cathedral of Sv. Nicholas in Prešov, Roma version of the song by B. Herstek Santos Mikulášis. Translation into Romani language is from G. Glovacký and the Private Secondary school supervised the linguistic adjustment of the song. Song sounded after The Holy Mass, and it was a surprise and memento for reflection for the faithful audience. Student ensemble even adds a short selection from the repertoire of Roma spiritual songs which were admired by an audience.
During the concert in the church was submitted just basic information about the project and about the Private secondary school, broader context and details were discussed during meeting with clergy in the parish office in Prešov where students were invited to lunch.
In the afternoon the presentation associated with artistic production right on the square before the tent of sister Maristellis, a member of a religious order Congregatio Jesu (known as English virgins) and its charity (Magis) took place in order to attract passers-by and thus publicize its activities. Citizens of Prešov admired the performance of students and created a sizeable spectator backdrop for an impromptu performance.
The action was attended by local Roma with whom we have established a creative dialogue about Romani life and culture. Students might confront their knowledge and skills acquired during the work on the texts with local Roma. And especially when the homeless who disrupt the program forced our attention. Terms like "Presentation of Roma in the public eye", "view of the majority on the Roma people," "Living Together", etc. took a concrete form and the problem had to be solved immediately. The "public", audience or "majority" was represented in large numbers, and the Roma, they were once again "thrown into one bag", because this intruder – a homeless man - attracted the attention and in the eyes of public he presented the Roma as minority. Though we played a valuable artistic performance and Sister Maristellis is Roma, all the "good" and positive what we were trying to show and demonstrate in front of members present majority was slamming into by a jolly Roma who was able to overthrow the whole event. Originally we wanted to call the police, but finally we managed incident by culture and dialogue. Fortunately...
It is not the exceptional case, it`s a common phenomenon. And again, the end of this educational social extempore is clear: education determines the behavior, knowledge opens the way to employment and employment eliminates exclusion and poverty...
Only the school and education can bring answers and solutions of problems which we meet during a life!
Return to Kežmarok was at early evening.
